Top 15 Powerful Content Management Systems
Posted on 20. Oct, 2009 by Editorial Staff in Featured
If you are a beginner web developer or you just want to start your own website with a self hosted script and you don’t have any knowledge on how to do it, web CMS are the perfect solution for you. First of all let me tell you what is a web CMS.
“A content management system (CMS) such as a document management system (DMS) is a computer application used to manage work flow needed to collaboratively create, edit, review, index, search, publish and archive various kinds of digital media and electronic text.[1]
CMSs are frequently used for storing, controlling, versioning, and publishing industry-specific documentation such as news articles, operators’ manuals, technical manuals, sales guides, and marketing brochures. The content managed may include computer files, image media, audio files, video files, electronic documents, and Web content. These concepts represent integrated and interdependent layers. There are various nomenclatures known in this area: Web Content Management, Digital Asset Management, Digital Records Management, Electronic Content Management and so on. The bottom line for these systems is managing content and publishing, with a workflow if required.” – from Wikipedia
Well…this is the Wikipedia definition for CMS. To simplify it, I will define the CMS (Content Management System) term to be the web script that helps you to create and maintain content and also helps you to make it public and share with people.
1. WordPress

When you say WordPress, people already know that you are talking about the best existing web CMS. Let me tell you why I think WordPress is the best CMS. First of all, WordPress is very flexible and it is very customizable, customizing as you might know is the main interest of every web developer or web entrepreneur. The second thing that makes WordPress “special” is the fact that Automattic (the company responsible for WordPress) has done the best to create a web community to help improving and growing it’s importance.
The WordPress community is now one of the biggest web communities in the world and is currently building tons of useful plugins and designs for WordPress users. If you don’t believe me and you still believe the contrary, I really encourage you to test WordPress.
You can also read more about WordPress on it’s official website or here.
2. Drupal

Drupal was for a long time my favorite CMS. Like WordPress, Drupal is very easy to use and customize. You can create, customize and publish your work, articles, images and videos very easy and also you can control the design of your websites. Drupal’s official website is sharing a huge resource section where you can find lots of Templates and Hacks for it.
The functionality of Drupal is very diversified. You can use Drupal to create E-Commerce websites, web blogs, pod casting, forums and of course personal websites.

3. Joomla

Unlike WordPress and Drupal, Joomla was for me a huge challenge at first. Joomla is without a dub one of the most complex existing web CMS. I was literally lost in features and functions available there. Joomla is a very powerful CMS and many important websites are using it as a CMS.
You should probably know that Joomla is also the winner of CMS contests – read more
4. DotCMS

It is specialized on Enterprise activities and it also is one of the fastest growing enterprise CMS on the world.
5. PHP Fusion

This is the solution that many people choose just because is extremely easy to customize. It is no special, it has everything common, everything you might need for a website and of course is build in PHP.
6. Typo3 CMS

Typo3 is without a dub the choice of people who are starting a serious web project. Typo3 is very hard to use and you hardly can manage it without first reading the manual. Even Typo3 is hard to use, it is very secure and powerful.

Silver Stripe is a CMS which focuses on business website development and online business, so Silver Stripe is the ultimate solution for your web company.
8. RailFrog

This is a simple yet powerful CMS build with Ruby on Rails.
9. Xoops

A very popular Content Management System and also the first choice of people from Source Forge community. The developers work very hard to improve the platform and also they create modules and hacks on a daily basis, so you will be able to build whatever type of site you want using Xoops CMS.
10. Concrete5

A flexible CMS and easy to use too. Concrete5 is a great choice for those who want to create a web community, but also great for personal or business uses too. It seems like people are more and more interested in using the Concrete5 platform, and I really recommend it too.
11. e107

This was the first CMS I have ever used. E107 is a great CMS and like all the CMS’s here, e107 has a great community who creates daily resources for it. The thing is that e107 is more for general use.
12. PostNuke

Helps you develop a powerful PHP website without having any developer skills or any programming knowledge. Even the development for this CMS has been stopped, PostNuke it still is a good Framework for developers.
13. Pagety

I must say that I really like the attitude of the development team of this CMS and also they really have an easy to use CMS. Like their motto says “You put the C…we put the MS” – so, all you have to do is to write content and the rest will be taken care of by Pagety.
14. Plone

Plone has a great, huge community of developers, and like I said, a strong based community of developers is the thing that actually defines the power of that CMS.
15. MODx

This CMS is combining more technologies and it is one of the few CMS’s that can actually fit your needs, for developers this is the heaven because MODx can also be used as a framework for their work.

I’m a bit disappointed. The compiled lists of “top X” content management systems is simply 1 persons opinion. There are several viable content management systems available that rival these.

I think you’ll find a few likable players.

Hey Daniel!
Well… of course is one person opinion. Is my opinion and I am sure that there are lots of great CMSs
and you should feel free to share them with us. The thing is that I have used all of the CMSs in this list and only first 3 CMSs are displayed as a Top (as you might see there are stars in screenshoots) , the rest are randomly displayed because I can’t figure out how will be best to arrange them. I will also include your CMS because the main idea of the post is to share with people good stuff.
Thank you!

Joomla!, Drupal, and WordPress will always be my top 3, but it’s good to see a large amount of competition and variety out there.

I created a new typo3 site and I don’t have a good design yet. But I hope your tutorial will help me a bit, but it looks complicated for a beginner like me.
