This is a question which is very popular between all kind of bloggers and people who want to start a blog. I have used both blogging platform and I can say that both of them are extremly flexible and you can create whatever type of blog you want by using them.
Few years ago, when I start blogging I had no money and no resources to start a blog. With no idea of what blogging is, and what I can do with a blog, I decided to join the “bloggers clan” and I signed up for Blogger. Back than, Blogger was not owned by Google and it’s popularity was nothing like today. Untill than, I was a guy who spended much time in the front of computer building simple sites with small functions and many of them were based on buyied scripts, so I was not that much into web development.
I must tell you that I was impressed about the power of Blogger. Blogger gaved me the oportunity to share thoughts, information, images and videos with my friends, I was amazed about the things I could do, and most important they had no space limit, so I could do whatever I want. I was than captivated and soon became very interested in creating Blogger themes. Creating themes for Blogger was a very easy yet important thing.
The fact that I didn’t have the full access to all files and stuff uploaded made me to go using Wordpress. I was pretty familiar with all famous CMS’s (Content Management Systems) – Joomla, Xoops, Drupal, PhpBB etc. When I saw how easy I can manage everything in Wordpress, I was amazed and decided to continue using it, plus now I am able to maintain files and I have access to everything. To be in control of everything is my thing
…so, I went to wordpress.org to learn more about wordpress and it’s community.
When I “steped” into the Wordpress community, I knew that Wordpress is the perfect CMS for me and my online business. The plugin section was full of everything I ever could need and the community members were very supportive and I got every answer I need to continue my “journey”.
As a conclusion of things I said before…those too blogging platforms are perfect for everything you might want to create. I used both of them and I still am. I have successful blogs using Blogger and also successful blogs that are using Wordpress.
If you are a beginner blogger and you don’t have many resources to start a blog, than Blogger is the perfect solution for you. You can sign up for Blogger easy and you can start your own blog in less than 2 minutes. Just go to blogger.com and create an account now! Also, if you don’t have a personal web host….you can choose to use the Wordpress online hosting Wordpress.com, is a very similar service to Blogger, but I recommend you Blogger between this two just because the influence of Google and because you will be able to find more modifications, tips and tricks for it.
When you think about the power of both blogging platform is pretty hard to compare because both of them are exceptional. When we talk about the way you maintain them and how hard to handle…the things are completely different.
If you don’t have enough experience and want to create just a simple personal blog, Blogger is ok for you. Blogger has the style of Google, that means that Blogger is concentrating on web and everything that interacts with Blogger needs to be hosted on other website or server. Thinking about the pictures, part of them are hosted on Google Picasa. So is like I said…you don’t have entire control for every single file.
Hey…don’t think that Blogger is good just for Personal blogs…if you want to start a real web business you can do it easily, but if you decide to do it, I really recommend you to buy a domain name and associate it with your Blogger blog even there are some successful blogs who are still using the old blogspot.com subdomain. I can give you one example I really appreciate and respect – Google Operating System, a blog owned by Alexandru Citu. This guy really proves that you can build a successful and powerful blog using Blogger. So, you see now that is not very important which blogging platform you choose as long as you came with interesting stuff for your readers.
Since the Wordpress has become that popular, many interesting blogs appeared and many of them are now pretty successful. I don’t think I really need to give examples because you know there are many and their number is growing everyday. Many of the websites that are currently running on Wordpress platform are not even blogs. Because Wordpress is an open source CMS, it allows it’s users to create and manipulate it’s structure and create different types of websites. I was amazed to see how many things you can do with Wordpress. A nice list with some of Wordpress applications created is here “5 Odd And Unique Uses Of WordPress” and “25 Unique uses of WordPress as CMS“
In this point of view, Wordpress is definitely superior to Blogger functions just because for the moment Blogger doesn’t allow users to become your blog members and the option of becoming a successful community is actually 0 in my opinion of course.
The SEO Optimization
SEO is vital for every existing successful website because most targeted traffic comes from search engines and if you don’t have targeted traffic, you don’t have buyers and if you don’t have buyers you don’t have money from your site.

After Google bought Blogger, everything about SEO optimizing become clear and simple for Blogger users. First and most important, they add keywords options which allows people to add keywords and description to their posts (read the How to add Different Meta tags to Different Blogger Posts article). A second and important thing is that you don’t have to add some mods or plugin to create the SEO friendly URLs and of course, users don’t have to create an .xml sitemap for their pages and posts and they don’t have to submit it to Google Webmaster Tools. This can save you important time.
for Wordpress powered blogs
Well… wordpress needs some modifications and plugins which can be quite a headake for many people, but the advantage is that you are in the control of everything and you are the one who choose how this process will be made.
I will make a list with best things of both blogging platform in order to make things easier for you to understand wich one fits your needs.
Blogger
Good Things- Free – Easy to use – SEO optimized – No space Limit
Bad Things – You don’t have full control of the hosted files!
Self Hosted Wordpress
Good Things- You are in the control of everything – Easy to use – A community that is providing tons of plugins
Bad Things – You have to pay for it!
This is it! I hope I helped you to understand something about what blogging platform you should choose and most of all why you should choose it. Beginning with a platform that suits your needs can be very useful for your future web business, so it is important to know what you want because if you don’t you will not have the success you want.
