It seems like recently I’m posting only design related articles. Well…W3Mag.com is not just a design web blog, W3Mag.com is a website where we talk about all HTTP and also how to promote our websites. You can consider this post as an introduction to SEO and online promotion because here I will tell you the basics only.
Nowadays everyone seems to know what is SEO (Search Engine Optimization) but does everybody know how to use SEO techniques? NO. A louder NO…and I’m going to tell you why.
SEO is without a dub the most important web marketing tool. In simple translation, if you don’t have a well optimized SEO website, than your website does not exist. There are actually many ways to get traffic to your website or blog and maybe there are ways to get even more traffic in shorter time than SEO ways, but the SEO way is better for your product and obviously for you.
Why is SEO traffic better than other traffic?
First of all, you have to know that SEO traffic is the result of keyword search on major search engines. When the visitor comes to your website trough simple links or ads, they have a simple clue or a long definition about what your site is about. When visitors search for terms in search engines, they will find your site and your site is exactly what they want, so than you have won a new loyal visitor that will came to your site more often just to find some related articles on those keywords.
When we speak about earnings, the SEO traffic also wins, because the stats shows that users that come from major search engine tend to click on ads, on the other hand, the traffic from social media websites has a pretty low click through rate.
Those are just few of the benefits of a good SEO optimization. Because this is the first true SEO article I wanted to tell you that W3Mag will treat this “science” leisurely and we will try to make you understand how to learn and also apply all the SEO parts in order to improve your website traffic and, also build a successful web community.
The Page Rank
What is page rank ?
PageRank is a link analysis algorithm, named after Larry Page, used by the Google Internet search engine that assigns a numerical weighting to each element of a hyperlinked set of documents, such as the World Wide Web, with the purpose of “measuring” its relative importance within the set. The algorithm may be applied to any collection of entities with reciprocal quotations and references. The numerical weight that it assigns to any given element E is also called the PageRank of E and denoted by PR(E).
from Wikipedia.org
Hehe…I know that you don’t understand that much. This is the definition from Wikipedia but, in simple translation, the page rank is actually the mark that Google gives to each website to show the importance of that website for Google. The page rank is influenced by the number of links to that website or article and also the quality of the links to that page. The page rank is a value between 0 and 10.
Many people consider that the page rank is not as important as the content and they are right, but they also forget that is pretty important in order to build a successful website. The page rank is also the one that decides where your article or website will be displayed (after the relevancy criteria).
Like I said earlier, you should not concentrate on getting tons of links, only if those links have a high PR or if they are from important websites. You should concentrate on getting more and more important links than concentrating on getting more low quality links. The links to your site are named backlinks. You can check how many backlinks you have by entering the command “link:site.com” in Google search. The command is without the quotes and also site.com is considered to be your website. There are also lots of SEO tools to help you improve your page rank and to show you how many backlinks you have or just a simple script to show you the current PR of a page.
For analyzing the PR of a website or page I highly recommend you to use the Google toolbar for Firefox. Now everything sounds pretty easy, right? Well is not! Building high quality backlinks to your website can be a quite difficult job.
How to build backlinks to your website?
Links from powerful and high quality websites are recognized by every search engine, even if is Google, Yahoo Search Engine or MSN, their robots will know if you have natural and high quality links, simple links from simple websites or if you don’t have any backlinks for a particular page.
Like I said, building backlinks is like a big part of SEO and also might be considered to be a science. That’s why I collected some articles about this subject and you will see that every SEO expert has some other way of building backlinks than the other one.
